Urinalysis is a test that can help monitor or diagnose a number of medical conditions. A urinalysis is done to examine your urine and detect problems such as kidney disease, bladder infection, and even drug abuse. It also can help your doctor decide if you need further testing and monitoring. Your healthcare provider will ask you to collect a urine sample at home or in the office. Make sure to collect at least 1 to 2 ounces of fluid-rich urine. The urine will then be sent to a laboratory for testing. It will be examined for color, physical appearance (how it looks to the naked eye), microscopic appearance, and chemical appearance. Some of the chemicals that can be detected include red blood cells, skin cells, crystals, casts, and tube-shaped proteins, as well as bacteria, parasites and other substances.
