COVID-19 Testing Q&A

COVID-19 Testing in Rockville, MD

What is COVID-19 testing?

COVID-19 testing screens to determine if you have (or had) the novel coronavirus. COVID-19 is a highly contagious disease, but it doesn’t always present symptoms. Therefore, it’s possible to spread it to others without even realizing it.

If you think you’ve been exposed to someone with COVID-19, it’s important to undergo testing and update your
COVID-19 vaccines. The sooner you receive a diagnosis, the sooner you can take steps to protect yourself, your loved ones, and the community.

At LJ Medical Health and Wellness Clinic, the team offers several types of COVID-19 testing, including:

What are the types of coronavirus testing?

Rapid antigen test

A rapid antigen test provides instant results. During this type of test, Dr. Tamon swabs your nose and throat with a long Q-tip to collect a sample. She places the sample in a special chemical solution that detects specific virus proteins. Rapid antigen tests are quick and convenient, but they’re less accurate than PCR tests.

Rapid antibody test

An antibody test determines if you’ve had COVID-19 in the past. During this type of test, Dr. Tamon draws a sample of blood and sends it to a laboratory for analysis. If your blood has antibodies for COVID-19 special proteins that protect your immune system –– it means that you were likely infected with the novel coronavirus.

PCR Test (priority)

A PCR or molecular priority test takes between 24-48 hours to process, but the results are more accurate than rapid antigen testing. During a PCR test, Dr. Tamon swabs your nose and throat with a long Q-tip. She sends your sample to a laboratory that analyzes it for the presence of COVID-19.

PCR Test (standard)

If you don’t need the results of your test right away, Dr. Tamon might recommend a standard PCR test. Standard PCR tests are the same as priority PCR tests; the only difference is that the results take about three or four days to process.

The process for COVID-19 testing depends on the type of test you choose.

What does COVID-19 testing involve?

Drive-through coronavirus testing

Drive-through coronavirus testing allows you to receive a COVID-19 test from the comfort of your vehicle.

First, visit the website and schedule a time that’s most convenient. On the day of your appointment, drive or walk up to the testing site. A nurse or member of the administrative staff conducts your test. A day or two later, you receive the results of your test in an email.

Mobile COVID-19 testing

If you don’t want to leave your home or business, consider mobile COVID-19 testing. Simply schedule a time and date, and a trained medical tester comes to you. The test is quick and hassle-free and performed adhering to all CDC guidelines. A few days later, you receive the results in an email.
